Superman's 1953 Alvis TA21 Drophead Coupe (DHC)
This Alvis has a new 350 cubic inch 200 hp Chevrolet crate motor. Rebuilt 3 speed Chevy transmission and a 12 bolt Ford Differential. Cooling is with a custom Rod Davis aluminum radiator. New tires.
In 1952, just 70 of these 1953 left-hand drive aluminum bodied drop head roadsters were shipped to North America. I have been told there are only 3 registered at this time.
Louis Panuse, who I have met, took delivery of this car and owned it until 1960. He leased the car to ZIV studios. Actor George Reeve's then star of Superman Television series, had insisted that his character appeared in an identical vehicle as he drove in real life. This Alvis appeared in several episodes of "Adventures of Superman" series which ran from 1953 to 1957. Edie Mannix's wife gifted Reeves a new Alvis TA21. Mr. Mannix was who was an MGM executive and connected with the mob had George Reeve shot. The entire drama was played out in the recent movie "Hollywood Land" staring Ben Afflec as Reeves. I have documentation and boxes of information on ALVIS that was given to me by Robert Doss. Mr. Doss owned the car when I purchased it at Russo and Steele in Scottsdale, AZ.
I purchased this car February 12, 2014. I have driven it just over 1,000 miles. The car has been in several shows by invitation and other shows. Even with the 40 plus year paint and leather upholstery the car is a favorite and has won a number of awards. The car was trailered to all out of area car shows.
Just last week the Alvis was in a Europa Car Show and was parked with a 1929 6.5L Le Mans Bentley and a 1939 Lagonda LG-6 Drop-Head Coupe. (Both Million Dollar Cars). The Alvis was not for sale at that time but had a lot of interest.
